Know the Laws for Vehicular Accidents

Every state has traffic laws. It is important to know what to do and what not to do after an accident. The laws can be placed into two categories:

  1. Laws that deal with damage to property and compensation
  2. Laws that deal with damage to a person or persons and compensation for their injuries, usually tried by a florida personal injury attorney

Here is a short summary of the law:

  • If you are in a crash of any kind with a vehicle with occupants, you must stop and wait for the proper authorities to arrive so they can assess the accident. A report must be filed on the accident.
  • If someone is injured in the crash, you must get help. Help can be a phone call away. You can also notify another driver that assistance is needed. If necessary, you can give first aid or perform life saving procedures.
  • If the vehicles are blocking the flow of traffic, you must move the vehicles. This can be done manually or with a tow truck. If injured persons are blocking the movement, you must wait for emergency personnel to move them, unless there is imminent danger, such as a fire.
  • If you hit property or a vehicle that is unoccupied, you must contact the owner. If the owner is not available, leave a note with your name, address, telephone number, and license plate number. Notify your insurance and law authorities.
  • In Florida, if you have three crashes in three years, you must complete an approved driver’s improvement course or your license will be cancelled.

The laws are not so much about getting into trouble as protecting all the parties involved. Drive carefully and be friendly.
