Traveling Alone With Children
Traveling with children is stressful but when it comes to traveling alone with children, that stress is often multiplied. There are many safety issues to consider whether traveling by air or even taking a short road trip. Here are some tips for traveling alone safely with children.
Establish Boundaries
Establishing boundaries is very important no matter how young the child is. For younger children and toddlers, giving a brief explanation of how the travels will go and keeping it light-hearted and calm will help the child stay calm. Let them know if they are on an airplane there will be certain rules and that they have to stay close . For older kids and teens, be sure they are aware of whom to go to if there is a problem or who to contact if they are accidentally separated.
Never Leave the Child Alone
Some are under the assumption that it is okay to leave children alone for a few moments whether it is to run to the restroom or pay for gas. But it is never okay to leave a child alone especially when traveling by car. Even if the child is asleep it is always better to take the child along than risk a bad situation arising or an accident happening.
Never Take a Child or Infant Out of Their Car Seat
When traveling by car, be sure to look at each state’s child safety seat laws to find out how long they have to be in a car seat or a booster seat. It is also extremely important that an infant never be removed from their car seat while the car is in motion no matter what the situation. If the infant is crying and cannot be calmed, pull over to a safe place and try to calm them down.
